World Land Trust contributions reach £25,000
Contributions to World Land Trust carbon balancing projects from Brightstream (formerly Howard Smith Paper Retail) have reached £25,000 equivalent to the purchase, protection, and management of 516 acres of threatened wilderness.
Support of World Land Trust projects is funded through Brightstream’s Media Environmental Photo Paper, currently sold in Sainsbury’s outlets across the country, whereby 35p for the sale of every pack is donated to the UK based charity. Carbon Balancing by the World Land Trust, for whom Sir David Attenborough is a patron, tackles climate change through projects that both offset carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and conserve biodiversity.
Through land purchase of ecologically important standing forests under threat of clearance, carbon is locked that would otherwise be released. These protected forests are then able to continue absorbing carbon from the atmosphere. Referred to as REDD (Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation), this is now recognised as one the most cost-effective and swiftest ways to arrest the rise in atmospheric CO2 and global warming effects.
The Media Environmental photo paper is not only carbon balanced through the World Land Trust, but also FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified, and manufactured by a leading photo inkjet paper manufacturer in Germany who themselves use integrated production and renewable energy sources to minimise these products’ carbon footprint.
Mike Thomsett, Managing Director of Brightstream said: "We are delighted to have achieved this milestone in our support of The World Land Trust, which we feel is a worthy charitable organisation and does some tremendous work in its field."
"Our work is only made possible through the generous support of companies and organisations like Brightstream who donate alongside all our individual supporters", says John Burton, CEO of the World Land Trust. "It shows that commercial industry and environmental charities can work in partnership to save threatened wilderness areas and reduce the detrimental impact that humans have on the environment."
